Serena Williams is awarded the female athlete of the year honor by the Associated Press. "But I'm on my way", Williams said on the eve of the US Open final. She gave birth to her first child in September of 2017 via an emergency C-section, and it was a fight for survival after developing blood clots in her lungs that required four surgeries to treat a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. As noted by Yahoo, she trails Babe Didrikson Zaharias for most titles (six).

Williams received 93 votes from editors and news directors around the US, edging out gymnast Simone Biles (68). The rest of the top five included Notre Dame basketball player Arike Ogunbowale, snowboarder Chloe Kim and 2017 victor and swimmer Katie Ledecky.

Oklahoma's Miles Reynolds and Oklahoma State's Curtis Jones were named Co-Big 12 Newcomers of the Week for games played December 17-25, the conference announced Wednesday. It is the fifth time throughout her impressive career that she has been named the female athlete of the year. She returned to the WTA Tour in March and played in just a pair of events before the French Open, where she competed in a skin-tight, full-length black catsuit. After withdrawing due to a pectoral injury, Williams returned for Wimbledon.

Williams has dominated the sport of women's tennis for the bulk of her career, but her return to the spot throughout the past year is especially noteworthy.

Williams responded to the news with a tweet on Thursday, listing a number of adjectives to describe her reaction.

"Getting this far, crazy", it says. She hit one jumper to knock off previously unbeaten CT in the Final Four, then a 3-pointer in the championship game to lift Notre Dame over Mississippi State.
