Sony Tried To Sell 'Holmes And Watson' To Netflix After Bad Screenings

The film, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, offers a comedic take on the famous detective duo, but apparently no one is laughing.

On Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the movie has a laughably bad rating of 7%. Of those reviews, only two are positive (and mixed-positive at that), but at least that's enough to raise the new Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly movie out of the zero-percent review aggregation territory it sat in for the first two days of its release. All that aside, here's how you know the film is truly bad: Netflix didn't even want it. This is to say that good and bad content is welcome on Netflix - but one film was apparently so terrible that the company turned down an offer to buy it from a major film studio.

It is not uncommon for movies' Rotten Tomatoes scores to fluctuate upon release, and while Holmes and Watson had nowhere to go but up, it would be hard to imagine a world in which a $40 million comedy starring two of the most famous comic actors in Hollywood didn't get at least up into the single digits.

Samsung Wants to Bring Web Browsing, Office Work to the TV
As well as allowing for easier connectivity, Samsung is hoping this leads to more services being accessed through its TVs. Its 2019 TV sets will allow you to remote access your computer .

The Wrap's Alonso Duralde reported that Netflix turned down the project, too.

According to Deadline, the streaming service - which has, in the past, earned a reputation as a quantity-over-quality repository for any and all content, especially that no longer desired by studios - turned the film down.

Fan reviews on Rotten Tomatoes weren't much kinder, with user Tim M. writing, "Do not waste your money". Earlier this year, they made a big showing of releasing The Cloverfield Paradox right after the Super Bowl. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is 19 percent. "Are they becoming more selective now?" Is this the start of a change for Netflix?
