The Internet Agrees, It’s Time To Let Gritty Host The Oscars

Just two days after being named host of the Academy Awards, Kevin Hart stepped down following an outcry over past homophobic tweets by the comedian. "I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past", he tweeted.

As he stepped down from hosting the Oscars 2019, the Hollywood star said: 'I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscars... this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many wonderful talented artists.

Kevin Hart chose to quit after he received a phone call from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, asking that he apologise for comments he had made several years ago.

"Reason why I've passed is because I've addressed this several times".

The film academy didn't respond to messages Thursday evening.

The comedian made some comments on Twitter between 2009 and 2011 that included derogatory language about homosexuals. I have nothing against gay people, be happy.

Hart's offensive tweets were posted almost a decade ago and were well known, but it's current backlash has booted him out of the host gig this year. I'm sorry that I hurt people...

Ellis also appeared Friday on CNN's New Day to discuss Hart's apology and resignation, saying, "it wasn't the conclusion I think everybody would've liked".

The Oscars have a longstanding host problem, but Kevin Hart's swift downfall over old anti-gay tweets has led to bigger questions about the gig and the liability of social media histories.

"I want to be no distraction in a night that should be celebrated by so many great, talented artists", said Hart his withdrawal from the Oscar-Moderation.

"We were hoping that this was going to turn into a teachable moment, that Kevin Hart would still be hosting the Oscars and he would be using this moment not only to show his evolution around the LGBTQ community but also to then use the Oscars stage, one of the biggest stages in the world, to help build unity and awareness around the LGBTQ community and how we are marginalized in this country", Ellis continued, adding that she has been in contact with Hart's representatives.

And as comedian and actor Billy Eichner tweeted, "A simple, authentic apology showing any bit of understanding or remorse would have been so simple".

When asked to apologize by online commenters and the Academy Awards itself, Hart initially refused. Murphy soon after exited, as well.

The film academy moved up this year's ceremony to February 24, giving producers little time to find a replacement.

In an earlier post on Thursday, Hart wrote on Instagram that critics should "stop being negative" about his earlier anti-gay remarks.
