Adolf Erlingsson, a tour guide who was among the first on the scene, said: "It was terrible". "They didn't see any of it thankfully, one doesn't see much from the bridge and I stopped the auto when I had crossed the bridge and went to see if I could help". We struggled getting everyone out'.

Icelandic media said the vehicle fell eight metres from the bridge in Núpsvötn, just south of Vatnajökull glacier, in the south of Iceland.

Mr Erlingsson told The Times: "One of the..."

The remaining four were airlifted to hospital with critical injuries and police are not sure when they will be able to speak to them to find out more about the incident.

Rescuers assist after a jeep carrying seven people plunged off a bridge in Iceland.

Land Rover announced Thursday that the next-generation Defender will once again be offered for sale in the USA and Canada. Land Rover's boxiest, foxiest SUV - has been forbidden fruit for the USA for the last two decades or so.

"The driver was alive and trapped more or less under the dashboard".
