Trump lashes out at Mueller after Cohen and Manafort filings

In court filings, federal prosecutors in NY and those working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller made the case for why Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, deserved prison time.

He had provided information about contacts with Russian interests during the campaign, attempts by Russians to reach the campaign and about contacts with "persons connected to the White House" in 2017-2018, the filing added.

Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday by U.S. District Judge William Pauley in Manhattan on all of the charges to which he pleaded guilty. Though Cohen had previously implicated Trump in the payments, the prosecutors now are linking Trump to the scheme and backing up Cohen's allegations.

Russian Federation denies interfering in the election to help Trump.

Trump tweets: "Robert Mueller and Leakin' Lyin' James Comey are Best Friends, just one of many Mueller Conflicts of Interest".

However White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that the memo had revealed "nothing of value that wasn't already known". He has said he did so to stay in sync with Trump's political messaging, and that he consulted with the White House while preparing to testify to Congress.

"In particular, and as Cohen himself has now admitted, with respect to both payments, he acted in coordination with and at the direction of Individual-1", the document reads, referring to Trump.

Mueller said that discussions about the potential Moscow development were relevant to the investigation because they occurred "at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the US presidential election".

Trump's all-caps tweet follows Friday's filing of documents in court pertaining to Mueller's probe - one of which related to the admission by Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, that he'd made payments to two women at Trump's behest.

In what appeared to be a new disclosure, Mueller said that around November 2015, Cohen spoke with a Russian national who could offer the campaign "political synergy" and "synergy on a government level".

"The person told Cohen that such a meeting could have a "phenomenal" impact 'not only in political but in a business dimension as well'".

The commander-in-chief vowed his lawyers would produce a "major Counter Report" to rebut Mueller's findings, as and when he delivers them.

Manafort, who has pleaded guilty to several counts, violated his plea agreement by telling "multiple discernible lies" to prosecutors, they said.

In an additional filing Friday evening, prosecutors said former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to them about his contacts with a Russian associate and Trump administration officials.

The Michael Cohen sentencing memo, as many legal analysts have noted, says the President directed Cohen to make those payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

"After cheating the IRS for years, lying to banks and to Congress, and seeking to criminally influence the presidential election, Cohen's decision to plead guilty - rather than seek a pardon for his manifold crimes - does not make him a hero", they wrote. They said his sentence should reflect a "modest" reduction from the four to five years they said federal guidelines would suggest. Mueller's office gave him some credit for his assistance, saying that while his crime was "serious", he had "taken significant steps to mitigate his criminal conduct".
