Trump nominates ex Fox News anchor Nauert as UN envoy

FILE - President Donald Trump meets with outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley in the Oval Office of the White House, Oct. 9, 2018.

"On another level, it's easily explained by Trump's fascination with American cable news, and in particular with Fox Cable News Network", the former Washington Bureau Chief for the Chicago Tribune said.

Barr served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993 during the George H.W. Bush administration.

However, Haley admitted she and the president "agree on most things", but "there are certainly things that we don't agree on".

Mr. Trump called him "a highly respected lawyer" who is thought highly of by both parties. But since Republicans will continue to hold a majority in the Senate when the new Congress convenes in January, experts say she is likely to be confirmed.

"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", Barr said. The confirmation process could take months, given that a new Congress will form in 2019.

She would replace Nikki Haley, who announced that she was resigning in October.

Before joining the State Department, Nauert did not have any previous government or diplomatic experience.

A Columbia journalism school graduate and former ABC reporter, Ms. Nauert had two stints at Fox News, the first of which started in 1998 as a reporter. Before taking on the role of State Department spokeswoman, Nauert was employed as a Fox News anchor and correspondent. She reported on the 2016 national election for Fox and has since traveled to Myanmar and Saudi Arabia in her State Department role. "And remember, a major part of the United Nations ambassador's job is public diplomacy".

Mr. Trump said on Friday morning she is "very talented, very smart, very quick".

After Trump was inaugurated as president in January 2017, Nauert became - with no experience in government, foreign policy or politics - the spokeswoman at the State Department.

The post of attorney general has vexed Mr. Trump since the early days of his presidency, when Mr. Sessions recused himself from overseeing an investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Three people familiar with President Trump's decision to name Nauert confirmed the pick, according to the report.

During her tenure as a State Department spokeswoman, Nauert largely stuck to the department's official script, often deflecting questions about USA allies, including Israel.

She will face a variety of challenges if confirmed for the job, including championing USA efforts to contain Iran's influence in the Middle East and ensuring the global body maintains tough sanctions on North Korea as Washington tries to negotiate an end to Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.
