Trump sees 'very strong signals' that China is ready to deal

But the Chinese commerce ministry said negotiators will "actively push forward negotiations within 90 days in accordance with a clear timetable and roadmap" - marking Beijing's first public acknowledgement of the deadline announced by the United States at the weekend.

However, Mr Trump risked more confusion over the state of relations when he took to Twitter to say: "We are either going to have a REAL DEAL with China, or no deal at all - at which point we will be charging major Tariffs against Chinese product being shipped into the United States".

"Very strong signals being sent by China once they returned home from their long trip, including stops, from Argentina", Trump said, speaking of China's attendance at the G-20 summit last weekend.

Mr. Trump's 10 percent tariff on $200 billion of Chinese goods was set to increase to 25 percent on January 1. For its part, China has slapped tariffs on $110bn of U.S. imports.

He also said that Xi had promised him that the Chinese government would crack down harder on fentanyl shipments from China to the USA, and tweeted a quote from a Bloomberg story which said that China was ready to restart imports of US products, including soybeans and natural gas.

Failure would raise the specter of a major escalation in the trade battle, with fresh USA tariff action and Chinese retaliation possibly as early as March.

Mr Trump said this week on Twitter that Beijing had agreed to "reduce and remove" tariffs the 40% tariffs it places on USA cars.

"We should not rule out the possibility, for example, that if China was to undertake something dramatic - like a commitment to zero tariffs over time - that such a commitment would not just be made on the basis of reciprocal actions by the United States, but by all WTO member states", Rudd said, referring to the World Trade Organization.

"It doesn't seem like anything was actually agreed to at the dinner and White House officials are contorting themselves into pretzels to reconcile Trump's tweets (which seem if not completely fabricated then grossly exaggerated) with reality", said an investor note issued by JPMorgan. "But if not remember, I am a Tariff Man".

Mr Pompeo said in Brussels on Tuesday that the U.S. could abandon some global agreements to thwart bad actors like China, which he accused of cynically exploiting World Trade Organisation rules. In a series of Tuesday morning tweets, the president showed optimism about reaching a "fair deal", but stressed that he is "a Tariff Man" if talks fail.

BMW, the largest exporter of American-made vehicles has been planning to boost output of utility vehicles from its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant with the launch of its new flagship, the X7 SUV - many of them bound for China.

Global financial markets sank to one-week lows on Wednesday amid the renewed trade concerns, extending Tuesday's slide.

One of the few automotive stocks to score a gain on Tuesday was Tesla which only recently began work on a new factory in Shanghai that eventually will let it sidestep the tariff battle.

"There are strong views in Japan that if China is honest about rapprochement with Japan, while respecting relevant World Trade Organisation rules based on scientific evidence, China should significantly speed up the process towards lifting the restrictions against Japanese goods and products", the source said.

The White House's press release said that the People's Republic "will agree to purchase a not yet agreed upon but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other products".

Trump added China would roll back tariffs of 40 percent on cars, though Beijing has yet to confirm the move.
