United Kingdom vehicle manufacturing output falls by a fifth as demand slumps

Manufacturing falls for fifth straight month

With less than 100 days until Britain is due to leave the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May has yet to win the support of much of her Conservative Party for the deal she struck last month with other EU leaders.

British vehicle production fell by a hefty 19.6% in November against last year's pace, according to SMMT data, as export demand slumped (down 23%).

United Kingdom commercial vehicle production increased 26.5 per cent in November, driven by a doubling of production for the United Kingdom market which offset a small drop in exports.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "It's very concerning to see demand for United Kingdom built cars decline in November, with output seriously impacted by falling business and consumer confidence in the United Kingdom allied to weakening export markets".

In the year to date, more than 1.4 million cars have been built in the United Kingdom overall, an 8.2% year on year decline, with export volumes down 75,085 units and output for the domestic market down 54,143.

SMMT said no-deal divorce would have an immediate and devastating impact on the industry, "halting production, undermining competitiveness and causing irreversible and severe damage".

Big signs to look out for are "freeze by" dates of November 12 or November 13, as well as the establishment number "EST". The recalled Jennie-O turkey products were produced at the company's Faribault, Minnesota, plant October 22nd and 23rd.

But ongoing research by the SMMT has shown the catastrophic effects of such a scenario, with three-quarters of carmakers in the United Kingdom saying in latest analysis that a "no-deal" Brexit would hit their business, impacting on profitability and future investment.

Production for the home market shrunk 1.9 percent, while that for the export market plummeted 22.8 percent.

Hawes also issued a warning about the adverse consequences for the United Kingdom automotive sector of a "no-deal" Brexit. Brexit is already having an impact - in output, costs and jobs.

Lloyds Bank said on Friday its monthly survey of business sentiment sank to its lowest since just after the referendum decision in June 2016 to leave the EU.

He strongly called on both government and parliament to have their responsibilities to take no-deal withdrawal option off the table, or "risk destroying this vital United Kingdom industry".
