US Accuses Russia, Syria of Fabricating Story of Chemical Weapons Use

"The Russian Defense Ministry interprets the US State Department's hysterical statement alleging that the November 24 chemical attack by terrorists in Aleppo was allegedly staged, as an attempt to exert pressure on the OPCW [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons] in order to hinder an unbiased investigation", the ministry said.

Earlier on Friday, State Department Spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a press release that the forces allied to the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad likely used tear gas against civilians in Aleppo last month.

In separate statements issued on Friday, London and Washington also warned Moscow against undermining a shaky truce in the war-torn country.

In a statement, press director Robert Palladino claimed that "the Assad regime and Russian Federation falsely accused the opposition and extremist groups of conducting a chlorine attack in northwestern Aleppo", and that the U.S. Aleppo has witnessed some of the most vicious fighting of the country's civil war and was held by forces opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad until being retaken in a pro-government offensive backed by Russian Federation and Iran two years ago.

"The United States has information indicating Russian and Syrian personnel were involved in the teargas incident, and believes that both countries are using it as an opportunity to undermine confidence in the ceasefire in Idlib", the statement read. He said officials have prevented an investigation of the site.

The Russian embassy in Washington hit back at the claims in a Facebook post.

Both Syrian government forces and opposition groups fighting in Syria have been accused of using chemical weapons in the seven-year war and both sides have blamed the other for allegedly carrying out false-flag operations. According to USA and British officials, however, it didn't happen, and the Syrian and Russian governments made up the whole thing to make the putative attacks, which again, were an al-Qaeda-linked faction known to have chemical weapons, look bad. It is important for Syrians and the global community that the truth comes out.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that witnesses did not report the odor of chlorine that is characteristic of such attacks.

State media showed images of residents being treated in hospital.

Negotiators from Russian Federation and fellow Assad ally Iran met last week with opposition supporter Turkey in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, making no apparent headway in a UN-backed goal of setting up a constitutional committee by the end of the year.

Jan Egeland, in a press conference last week before he stepped down as the head of the UN Humanitarian Task Force for Syria, warned that the flare-up amounted to "a huge powder keg in the middle of three million civilians".
