White House Targets Pelosi Even After Trump's 'Proud' Shutdown Vow

But Pelosi has denied claims they haven't provided a counteroffer.

Leading up to the shutdown, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, incoming Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Pence negotiated with congressional leaders on behalf of the White House, but a deal could not be struck.

But even that may be hard without a compromise because the Senate will remain in Republican hands and Trump's signature will be needed to turn any bill into law.

The president tweeted the contention that the ongoing shutdown "isn't about the Wall", adding: "This is only about the Dems not letting Donald Trump & the Republicans have a win". Trump said the local government is "doing nothing about it".

The American Federation of Government Employees, a union that consists of more than 700,000 federal employees, had a different reaction. The Defense, Energy, Labor and other departments are funded through September 30.

The shutdown is idling hundreds of thousands of federal workers and beginning to pinch citizens who count on some public services, and it's looking increasingly like it will be left up to a divided Congress to deal with.

The 435-seat House was set to reopen on Thursday but on January 3, the 2017-18 Congress will be replaced by the 2019-20 Congress and control of the House will switch to the Democrats from the Republicans.

Trump was adamant during the disastrous meeting with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) earlier this month that he would take all of the blame for a government shutdown.

"We fully expect until she is elected speaker and has locked that vote up, we don't expect to hear from the Democrats again".

In the new Congress, Senate Republicans will increase their number of seats to 53 but still will need Democratic support to pass any legislation requiring a 60-vote majority.

House Republicans had passed their own bill last week that meets the President's request of $5 billion in new funds for the border wall.

On Thursday, the House and Senate adjourned after short pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene on Monday, CNN reports, thus delaying any negotiations until next week.
