Cops were called to reports of a stabbing in the street just before 1am today.

DOZENS OF PEOPLE have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in London after a man was stabbed in the early hours of this morning.

A horrified eyewitness said the man was stabbed "right next to his heart" by a gang of youths shouting "get him".

Officers arrested the 39 people at a party near the scene on suspicion of attempted murder after they allegedly failed to co-operate with the investigation.

The Metropolitan Police said the arrests were made at a nearby property and they are being held in custody while inquiries continue.

So many people had been arrested because of a lack of cooperation on the part of potential suspects, police confirmed.

Superintendent Mark Lawrence said the arrest of 39 was "appropriate" because of the need to obtain "essential evidence".

The victim was taken to a hospital and is in critical but stable condition.
