$500000 Fortnite event to take place at the Australian Open

The Fortnite Summer Smash has been confirmed for the Australian Open, offering players a chance to win part of a $500,000 AUD prize pool.

Professional tennis is getting into the esports craze, as one of the sport's biggest events, the Australian Open, will feature a $500 thousand Fortnite: Battle Royale tournament called the 'Summer Smash'.

The Fortnite portion of the tournament will be known as the Summer Smash, which may confuse Northern Hemisphere residents who watched the Fornite Winter Skirmish last month. Over the weekend of January 26 there will be a solo tournament contested by 100 Fortnite pros with $400,000 up for grabs, as well as a charity duos event featuring content creators, athletes, and celebrities, with a further $100,000 available for donations.

NBA looking into circumstances of Cavs’ McCaw signing
Back in October, McCaw turned down a two-year, $5.2 million offer from the Warriors, a decision that puzzled many. His former team (the Golden State Warriors ) had a chance to match the offer but they declined.

There will be five qualifying heats of two matches each, the top 20 players from each heat will advance to the Grand Finals.

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the fun of a competitive Fortnite event to fans and players in Australia", said Epic Games co-founder Mark Rein. Loserfruit, Muselk, Lachlan, Lazarbeam and MrFreshAsian will be in the mix, with winnings and proceeds from the ProAm tournament going to charity. But anyone can get involved: players can register to compete in on-site qualifying events on the Saturday, with winners at these events competing in the final the very next day.

Registration for the Solos event starts at 9am on Wednesday, January 9.
