Apple puts brakes on car team but keeps eye on road

The company has now removed more than 200 people from the self-driving tech team, according to Automotive News Europe citing a CNBC report.

Apple's bid to enter the autonomous vehicle space has just suffered another setback. Let the speculation begin.

"We have an incredibly talented team working on autonomous systems and associated technologies at Apple".

Layoffs, internal strife and pivots appeared to plague the project since the public first learned of it in 2014.

Over 200 Apple employees are looking for new jobs this week after the company decided they were no longer required to work on Project Titan. The statement from Apple suggests the focus continues to shift from an autonomous vehicle to more general objective autonomous systems to support any and all of Apple's products.

Despite the storm bringing dangerously freezing temperatures across the Northeast, people seem to be enjoying the view. Emma Graham told CNN she felt like she was in "Elsa's castle".

At that point, Titan was said to directly involve as many as 2,700 individuals within Apple.

In August 2018, Tesla's former engineering Vice President Doug Field was appointed by Apple to lead team "Titan".

Apple added a former Tesla executive to a leading role on the self-driving vehicle tech team past year, and the staff cut came with internal reorganization.

In the past, Apple was rumored to be working on a fully self-driving vehicle. The company also reportedly entered into a partnership with Volkswagen in May to produce autonomous shuttles using the German manufacturer's T6 Transporter as a base.

The company described the efforts in broad terms, arguing that "this is the most ambitious machine learning project ever". However, Apple continues to leave us scratching our heads as to what the goal of Titan is.
