Emergency services in Melbourne are responding to reports that suspicious packages have been found at global embassies and consulates in Melbourne and Canberra.

It is not yet known which embassies in Canberra have been affected.

Two firetrucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars were seen at India's consulate in Melbourne, where staff members had been evacuated, some wearing protective masks.

The Indian High Commission is located in Canberra; there were no immediate reports of the high commission being among the locations that received suspicious packages.

The packages were being examined by "attending emergency services", the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement on Wednesday, without providing additional details. "The circumstances are being investigated", the official statement reads.

Suspicious packages have been delivered to the British Consulate and other embassies in Melbourne and Canberra, Australian police said.

A major operation is underway after packages were delivered to at least 10 global consulates across Melbourne.

Teams starting to dream of Kristaps Porzingis slipping away from Knicks
Creating enough space below the cap to sign Porzingis would likely decimate the current talent on the roster to get below the cap. The Knicks will hold on to Porzingis so long as they offer him a max contract or match one offered by another team.

Victoria Police said at this time, they believe the matter is "targeted and not impacting the general community".

A number of consulates have been evacuated in Melbourne.

There was also an alert of a hazardous material incident at Yertchuch Avenue in Ashwood, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, where the Swiss consulate is based.

Workers are being evacuated across town, with the embassies impacted believed to include the American, British, Indian, Italian, New Zealand, Korean, Egyptian, Pakistani, Greek, Danish, Spanish, Japanese, Thai and German consulates after hazardous materials were discovered just before 2pm.

The Swiss consulate in Melbourne was sent a small envelope containing a substance labelled "asbestos", said Peter Erb, the husband of honorary consul Manuela Erb.

"We handled the package according to our standard procedures and in close coordination with local authorities - the Melbourne Fire Brigade and the Australian Federal Police - who are investigating the incident", he said.
