At least 30 Afghans were killed on Sunday when the tunnel they were digging in to mine gold in northern Afghanistan collapsed, officials said.

Villagers reportedly dug a makeshift shaft in a river bed to hunt for gold and were caught in the collapse, the BBC reported. They were inside when the walls fell in.

Along with those killed, dozens were also injured as a landslide and flash flood engulfed the river in the morning in Kohistan district, an area about 110 kilometres from Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan. "We have sent a rescue team to the area, but villagers have already started removing bodies from the site".

At least seven other people were injured, officials say. A police spokesman for Badakhshan province, Sanaullah Rohani, earlier said the cause of the accident, which occurred in heavy snowfall, was a landslide.

In many cases, he said, the information was limited or already available publicly. The Russian government at the time denied that Russian hackers were involved.

Families of the wounded will receive 10,000 afghanis (about $130) in compensation, while those of the dead will get 50,000 afghanis, he said.

Afghanistan is a mountainous, land-locked nation that has huge, largely untouched reserves of copper, iron ore, chromite, mercury, zinc, gems, including rubies and emeralds, as well as gold and silver.

Illegal mining is common in resource-rich Afghanistan, with the Taliban relying on the sector for much of its revenue.
