Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves again emphasized the World's Greatest Detective angle of his "noir" Batman. "What it will be called ultimately, I don't know".

DC fans have officially gotten the most concrete information yet about Matt Reeves' The Batman, and we already have fanart of what one actor could look like in the titular role. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional".

For the unversed, after Christopher Nolan helmed and Christian Bale starred in the Batman series, Ben Affleck played the caped crusader in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League. Recently, Reeves' Batman film showed new signs of life.

After a more than a bit of hemming and hawing and to'ing and fro'ing and will he-ing and won't he-ing, we've finally got fairly concrete confirmation: Ben Affleck is the big screen Batman no more. "The comics have a history of that", he said.

Amell has even pitched a theoretical version of a Batman Beyond movie, which is ironic, seeing as an animated version might be headed to the big screen as well.

Reeves also revealed that the casting process for the film will begin shortly, with the director wanting to take another pass at the script before firming up a move into production. With the success of Aquaman, the uniqueness of Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker film, and tonally different productions like Shazam and Birds of Prey, the studio isn't overly concerned with making the DC Extended Universe a particularly interconnected one. I think the smartest idea for them would be to make it like a $30 million movie. "You can't have Batman without a villain. We're starting to put together our battle plan", he explained, holding true to his statements last summer regarding a 2019 start.

It was long rumoured that Deathstroke would be the villain in The Batman, with the famous baddie being introduced and portrayed by Joe Manganiello in the post-credits scene of Justice League.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child", Reeves said in a Warner Bros. press release at the time.

All that said, he revealed they're now targeting a "late spring or summer" 2021 release, though he added he "wouldn't commit" to a firm timeline.
