Brabham BT62 to Get Road Legal Conversion, Keeps 700 BHP Troop

Brabham BT62 gains road-legal option

For all intents and purposes, the road legal BT62 will not be part of a separate production run, but rather the same track auto, only trimmed down a bit in terms of performance and specs as to avoid causing problems for its owner once out in the world.

A similar process is being undertaken for customers in Australia, Brabham's home market, and the company will aim to fulfil requests for similar conversions in other jurisdictions, including potentially the United States since a number of BT62s have been ordered by Americans. The test ensures the auto has been designed and constructed to meet and achieve all regulatory and legal standards for road use.

In addition to meeting regulatory requirements, the conversion also makes the vehicle more usable on the road.

Supermarket slashes petrol prices again
Asda and Morrisons will implement these new pump prices from tomorrow, while Sainsbury's will make the change on Wednesday. At present, petrol prices are at its lowest level in over a year while diesel prices have touched a nine-month low.

The BT62 is the first auto in production to have the Brabham name since 1992's BT60 F1 vehicle, and is described by the Anglo-Australian company as an "unrestricted track vehicle with performance and power that significantly surpasses that of a GT car". So to enable the use of its 710hp, mid-engined BT62 on the road, Brabham will require an additional £150,000, on top of the car's £1 million base price - crikey. These include raising the ride height at the front and rear, increasing the steering lock range, adding air conditioning, locking doors and immobilisers - the latter two of which will be helpful when parking your auto at a track - and more luxurious upholstery. With that said, it's clear some customers are keen to have a road compliant option with their BT62, particularly to drive to and from the track.

While £150K would buy a perfectly agreeable "real world" vehicle to supplement a spartan, trailered BT62, we don't think that's likely to be a concern for Brabham's clientele. Brabham says the changes add weight to the auto but the mid-mounted 5.4-liter V-8 maintains its 700-horsepower output.

The first road-compliant BT62 is expected to be delivered this summer. Currently, the conversion work is offered with European customers in mind, but the company is said to be working with authorities elsewhere as well.
