Canada: mother and uncle accused of 'honor killing' extradited to India

Mother and uncle of Jassi Sidhu extradited to India to face honour killing charges

Mother and uncle of Jassi Sidhu extradited to India to face honour killing charges

The Punjab Police had registered a case in this connection in July 2000 and named Jassi's mother Malkit Kaur Sidhu and uncle Surjeet Singh Badesha in the FIR for allegedly conspiring to kill her.

Malkit Kaur Sidhu and Surjit Singh Badesha, both of whom are Canadian, were taken into custody on Friday, a day after their arrival, police said.

However, the Supreme Court of Canada ordered the extradition of the duo in 2017, but the decision was later stayed after the accused sought judicial review of the decision.

Former kabaddi player Sukhwinder Singh Mithu (41) of Kaunke Khosa in Jagraon is happy to know that the two main accused in the murder of his wife have finally been extradited to India.

After revealing her marriage to her family, the victim reportedly flew from Canada to India to reunite with her husband, Mithu Sidhu.

Jassi, who married Sukhwinder Singh, aka Mithu, a marginal farmer, against the wishes of her family in 1999, was found murdered in a ditch in June 2000, a month after she started living with Mithu in India.

Suarez told German magazine 11FREUNDE: "Anyone who has every player in Liverpool remains connected to the club for a lifetime". Suarez has gone on to impress with Barcelona and admits he is a big fan of Liverpool's manager, Jurgen Klopp .

"They will be handed over to our team (Punjab Police) at the Delhi airport today", Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Garg told PTI over phone.

"The court has granted a one day transit remand of the accused". The assailants forced Jaswinder into a auto and drove away. Her throat had been cut. But in May that year, Jassi came to India and gave the statement to the police in favour of her husband. Her husband was from a low socio-economic class: he was a rickshaw driver from a poor family.

"It's regretful that we used the term "honour killing" because, in this case, it's got very little to do with religion and more to do with greed", he said. Eleven of those charged were tried together in India.

But the British Columbia's Appeal Court overturned the deportation order on ground of India's "appalling" record on treatment of prisoners. Mr. Badesha and Ms. Sidhu are the only accused persons who remain to be tried in this matter.

"But I'm anxious because - and I hope I'm wrong - I believe that there's a high possibility of them being acquitted of the charges in India". T.S. 1987 No. 14. The Minister of Justice issued an Authority to Proceed, authorizing extradition proceedings against Mr. Badesha and Ms. Sidhu on the corresponding Canadian offences of conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to commit murder and murder.

They have denied involvement in her death, which happened in Punjab state. The extradition judge concluded that on this evidence, a reasonable jury, properly instructed, could find that Mr. Badesha and Ms. Sidhu hired the Indian perpetrators to kill Jaswinder.
