Newport were perhaps spurred on in their bid for an upset by fellow League Two side Oldham Athletic, who earlier came from behind to beat struggling Fulham at Craven Cottage.

But Puel, who may now be back under pressure at Leicester despite a fruitful festive period which included Premier League wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton, says his side should have had the quality to progress.

Albrighton hit the crossbar as Leicester piled on the pressure, which finally paid off when Ghezzal drilled home from the edge of the box after Joe Day pulled off an outstanding stop to deny James Maddison.

On another day of surprises following Cardiff, Huddersfield and Ipswich's exits to lower league opposition on Saturday, Barnet beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane thanks to Shaquile Coulthirst's penalty on 21 minutes.

The victory was especially sweet for Currie, in charge after the retirement last month of John Still, as his uncle Tony was once a Sheffield United great and has a stand named after him.

"We all fight for each other and we deserved it".

Elsewhere, QPR and Millwall edged out Championship rivals Leeds United and Hull City respectively, Watford ended Woking's dreams, Doncaster Rovers won 3-1 at Preston North End and there was a resounding 7-0 win for Manchester City over Rotherham United.

"It is a cup game and from the first chance they score a fantastic goal, and after that they defended well".

The floodgates opened after the break with Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane on target.
