Cathay Pacific sells $21900 premium seats for $922 in ticketing blunder

All eyes are on Cathay Pacific as it decides what to do with the tickets it appears to have sold in error at a fraction of their prices.

The airline admitted that it "made a mistake", but said it would honour the tickets.

"Hope this will make your 2019 "special" too!"

Asia's biggest global carrier Cathay Pacific accidentally sold premium tickets at a fraction of their price and plans to honour the discounts.

Travel website Point Me to the Plane uploaded a post on New Year's Eve claiming that first class round-trip tickets were available from US$845, from Vietnam to destinations like San Francisco, New York and Vancouver. Bargain hunters pounced on the news and managed to get their hands on the cheap tickets before the airfares were withdrawn from its website.

Women in India form '620km human chain' in fight for equality
The issue has become increasingly contentious in the run-up to India's general election, scheduled for April and May. Critics have accused the BJP of exacerbating religious tensions in order to rally their conservative Hindu base.

A business class return ticket to NY from Vietnam's Da Nang costs around US$16,000 (S$21,900) for travel in July and September, according to Cathay Pacific's website on Wednesday.

However, the South China Morning Post reported Wednesday that a New York-based professional who bought two first-class tickets between Da Nang and the US city had his booking cancelled without receiving an explanation from the airline. "Well done!" wrote Twitter user Joseph Knitt.

The pricing gaffe comes on the heels of a sophisticated hack on Cathay Pacific's computer systems a year ago that exposed private information of 9.4 million passengers in the world's biggest airline data breach.

Cathay is aware of the pricing issue and will provide more details later, a spokeswoman for the carrier said by phone.

In an update in November past year, the company said it was working with 27 regulators in 15 jurisdictions to investigate the data breach.
