CES 2019: Intel unveils 10nm PC products for AI and 5G

In its presentation Intel briefly discussed the likes of 10nm Ice Lake processors, hybrid 10nm Lakefield CPUs, and Project Athena laptops, as well as other non-PC-centric specific stuff like automotive, IoT, sports, AI, networking and 5G, etc. Intel SVP Gregory Bryant rattled off a whole litany of features built into the chips, including native Thunderbolt 3 support, 802.11ax Wi-Fi, and drastically improved graphics performance thanks to the new "Gen11" graphics hardware.

Other aspects of Ice Lake it is worth highlighting are its Intel DL Boost instruction sets to accelerate AI workloads, and the integrated Intel Gen11 graphics to improve graphics performance ( 1TFLOP) and support Adaptive Sync (FreeSync).

Intel also provided a sneak peek of a new client platform, code-named "Lakefield", that features a hybrid CPU architecture with Intel's new innovative Foveros 3D packaging technology. Lakefield leverages Foveros 3D packaging technology and comes with five cores, one Sunny Cove ore and four Atom cores.

The new processors join the company's three existing "flagship" 9th-generation desktop chips, which launched in October previous year - the Core i5-9600K, i7-9700K and i9-9900K - as well as the 9th-generation X-series for HEDT systems.

Intel expects Lakefield motherboards to be in production by the end of the year. Ice Lake device battery life will be stellar, according to Intel, and prospective buyers will also benefit from super-thin, ultra-mobile designs with excellent responsiveness.

Intel Xeon Scalable processor Intel said it has started shipping next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, also known as Cascade Lake processor. Ice Lake CPUs are expected to ship in volume in time for the 2019 holiday shopping season, which means availability in the third quarter of this year or later. The new models cover the Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 range and include the F-series chips, which have their integrated graphics disabled. This will now be the widely available series of 10nm CPUs from Intel.

AT&T is pretending like 5G is already here - and misleading users
But, as if Verizon were Coke and AT&T were Pepsi, Malady didn't even include AT&T's name in the article. Right now, AT&T doesn't have any device on its roster that boasts actual 5G capabilities.

In addition to news of the forthcoming 9th Gen mobile chips, Intel revealed new additions to its 9th Gen desktop family will be available this month. Intel will work closely with OEMs to develop and test Project Athena devices, all of which will be certified before launch.

More devices-especially smaller ones with very fast wireless capabilities-will necessitate new wireless infrastructure, and Intel is investing in that as well.

Finally, Intel briefly demoed the Snow Ridge network SoC.

And, in a bid to take on Qualcomm's "Always Connected" Windows 10 PCs, the chipmaker outlined a new standard for the next generation of notebooks called Project Athena.

The Intel stage event, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019, was full of many announcements.
