He also stressed that relations with Taiwan were "part of China's domestic politics" and that "foreign interference is intolerable".

On the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of a thaw in Beijing's relationship with Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized his position that the island is part of China and that foreigners should not interfere in the matter of Taiwanese independence. Chinese authorities would like to bring the island under their control and they have indicated they would use force, if needed.

Democratic Taiwan has shown no interest in being controlled by Beijing. In the past year or so, the Communist government has increased its pressure on multinational companies to refer to Taiwan as a part of China.

"Deviating from the "One China" principle will make the situation of cross (strait) relations tense and chaotic".

"China must and will be united, which is an inevitable requirement for the historical rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in the new era", President Xi told a gathering at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, to mark the 40th anniversary of a key Beijing overture to Taipei after the USA and China established ties.

It fears Tsai wishes to push for Taiwan's formal independence, though Tsai says she wants to maintain the status quo. "Reunification is a historical trend and it is the right path. Taiwan independence is an adverse current of history and is a dead end".

"It's a legal fact that both sides of the Strait belong to one China, and can not be changed by anyone or any force", Mr Xi said.

Bernardo Silva accepts pressure is on Manchester City for Liverpool clash
The former England man told Sky Sports: "If Liverpool don't lose at Man City, then that rules City out of the title race". Everyone knows how good their front three are - they work a lot and so do the midfielders.

Taiwan is a self-governed democracy and for all practical purposes has acted as an independent nation since 1950, when China's nationalist government was defeated by communist forces and fled there from the mainland.

Mr Xi reiterated in his speech that China will not give up the use of military force to ensure Taiwan returns to the fold.

She added that China must deal with the countries' differences in a peaceful way as equals, and it must be the government or public agencies that have been authorised by the government that sit down with us and talk.

The Message was a policy document issued by the National People's Congress - China's Parliament - on Jan 1, 1979, the same day China and the United States formally established relations after Washington broke ties with Taiwan.

While Xi said that people on both sides want peaceful reunification, it's unclear how his message will be received on the other side of the Taiwan Strait.

Xi pledged that unification would be under a one-country, two-system framework that would respect the Taiwanese social system and way of life and guarantee their property rights, religious beliefs and other rights.
