Christophe Dettinger: Fundraising for 'yellow vest' boxer ends after outcry

"I support honest citizens protesting against a president who governs against his people", Salvini said, while "firmly" condemning recent protest violence.

Dettinger, known when he was boxing professionally as "the Gypsy of Massy", after a town in the southern suburbs of Paris, was praised by many protesters, who lauded his courage while criticising alleged police brutality during the protests.

But government officials assailed the fundraising drive, with many calling for it to be shut down or for the pledged funds to be seized.

The images filmed on Saturday show a heavily built man in a black duffel coat square up to several police officers before knocking them down in a hail of punches and kicking them on the ground.

"Apparently, hitting a police officer pays off", Digital Minister Mounir Mahjoubi had already tweeted on Monday. "Everyone must assume their responsibilities: this fund is shameful", he added.

Leetchi initially defended its hosting of the fundraising, saying it was simply a "neutral" online platform.

AfD leader Joerg Meuthen tweeted that Magnitz was "beaten nearly to death" in a "cowardly and sickening" attack. Last week an AfD office in the eastern town of Döbeln was damaged by an explosion.

Dettinger, who has been identified and detained by the police, claimed to be "defending" himself, yet admitted that he "reacted badly".

It follows the eighth straight weekend of violent demonstrations across France.

Leetchi did not reveal how much was raised in total, but said that it would ensure the funds "will be used only to pay for legal costs" and that any money left over would be returned to donors.

Seven weeks into the demonstrations marked by weekly clashes in Paris and other French cities, Mr Philippe said the government would introduce a "new law punishing those who do not respect the requirement to declare (protests), those who take part in unauthorised demonstrations and those who arrive at demonstrations wearing face masks".

Another major demonstration has been called for Saturday, this time in Bourges, central France, instead of the capital.

The yellow vest rebellion - so-called after the high-visibility jackets all French drivers must carry in their cars - began in November as a fuel tax revolt but quickly swelled into a wider backlash against President Emmanuel Macron's pro-business policies and detached governing style.
