While the salaries of Puig and Wood for 2019 have yet to be determined - their arbitration hearings will be in January - Kemp, Puig and Alex Wood should be due roughly $42 million combined in salary next season.

The Reds also sent two prospects to the Dodgers, shortstop Jeter Downs and right-hander Josiah Gray.

The deal gives Los Angeles a couple of prospects and a couple of slots to fill.

"It was to grant him his release, more of fitting into the overall construct of the deal", said Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers' president of baseball operations.

Downs, 20, is a legitimate cusp-of-the-top 100 prospect. Profar is coming off his best season as a pro, batting.254 with 20 home runs and 77 RBIs in 146 games in 2018. Gray, 21, struck out 59 batters in 52 1/3 innings during 12 starts for the Greeneville Reds in the rookie-level Appalachian league. The one known goal for the Dodgers this off-season was to clear out some of their surplus of outfielders and starting pitchers which they accomplished Friday.

The Nationals reportedly offered Harper a 10-year, $300 million deal and they remain in the hunt as well. The White Sox could still have an edge in the finance department, with Harper expected to cost enough that even the newly relieved Dodgers would have to go over the luxury tax to get him.

Dealing two outfielders increases the speculation that free agent Bryce Harper could end up choosing Los Angeles. If that's not a concern, it's a possibility.

Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto is also on the block, though several teams are rumored to be interested.

The Dodgers have made blockbuster trades in the past but something about this trade involving fan favorites Puig and Kemp left Dodgers nation scratching their heads or sour.

After trading Alex Wood, Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig to the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers now find themselves in great position to spend this offseason.
