Fact-checking Trump's prime-time speech to the US

Here’s how Trump’s shutdown hurts millions of Americans who don’t even work for the federal government

"Democrats and an increasing number of Republicans in Congress have repeatedly urged the President and Leader McConnell to end the Trump Shutdown and re-open the government while Congress debates the President's expensive and ineffective wall". The president alleged that the Democrats in Congress had failed to acknowledge the crisis and refused to provide the border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect families and the nation. A lot of them are Canadians and Europeans.

He doesn't like being blamed for the government shutdown which is affecting 800,000 workers - even though he said he's prepared for it to go on for weeks or months. That's just plain wrong.

In 2013, Senate Democrats voted for a failed immigration bill that provided roughly $46 billion for a number of border security measures - including new fencing - but that legislation would have created a pathway to citizenship for some of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the US illegally.

His speech was a compendium of arguments, some of dubious nature, that he has made before: the border is being overrun by unsafe criminals who have committed violent crimes in the United States; migrant women and children are being victimised; the opioid crisis stems directly from a flood tide of illegal drugs crossing the southern border; his plan to secure that border includes advanced technology, more law enforcement personnel and, yes, a barrier costing $US5.7 billion ($8 billion) that would be made of steel slats, in deference, he said, to Democrats who oppose a concrete wall - a change Democrats say they never asked for.

SCHUMER: Thank you, Speaker Pelosi.

And yet after asking the television networks to clear their schedules so he could address the American people on the subject, Mr Trump nearly seemed reluctant to use the word. We don't govern by temper tantrum.

Democrats passed legislation the day they took control of the House that offered $1.3 billion for border security, including physical barriers and technology along the US southern border. The president, with his recent efforts, may have bought himself a bit more time for negotiations.

So, how do we untangle this mess? Pelosi on Tuesday called those proposals "smart, effective border security solutions".

THE FACTS: Few would argue that a humanitarian crisis is unfolding, as the demand for entry by migrants and the Trump administration's hardline response to them are overwhelming border resources, further backlogging the asylum system and forcing migrants to live in abysmal conditions on the Mexican side of the border. And unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of livelihoods and millions of Americans will be affected for the time being. With federal employees set to miss their first full paycheck on Friday, a prolonged shutdown could soon impact American businesses. Farmers and small businesses won't get loans they need.

Most presidents have used Oval Office addresses for noble purposes. This president just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention from the turmoil in his Administration.

My fellow Americans, there is no challenge so great that our nation can not rise to meet it.

Some correspondents have speculated that he may ultimately resort to such a declaration as a last-ditch tactic to allow him to reopen the government without losing face to Democrats.

He concluded: "The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall".
