Gdansk mayor 'stabbed on stage' by attacker

Gdansk mayor Pawel Adamowicz was attacked with a sharp tool during the "Light to Heaven" event, charity spokeswoman Magdalena Skorupka-Kaczmarek, told Polish news agency PAP.

After the stabbing, the man made an apparent gesture of triumph and strutted around the stage, media reported.

Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski condemned the attack as "an incomprehensible act of barbarism".

He reportedly shouted: 'My name is Stefan. "Civic Platform tortured me, that's why Adamowicz just died". A man ran to the stage and stabbed the official, claiming revenge for an injustice. Radio Gdansk cited its correspondent at the scene as saying the attacker had aimed for the heart and apparently pierced his victim's aorta.

PA slams Israeli "apartheid road" in West Bank
He warned that this road plan could lead to the expulsion of Khan Al-Ahmar village and more than 21 other Palestinian communities. About 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built illegally since the 1967 occupation of the Palestinian territories.

EU President Donald Tusk, Poland's President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki immediately expressed their concern and support for Mr Adamowicz. "Pawel, we are with you". After leaving Civic Platform, he was re-elected to a sixth term as an independent candidate in the fall. He marched in last year's gay pride parade, a rare action for a mayor in Poland.

The attack, which took place during a high-profile, long-running fundraiser called the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, caused shock and disbelief in Poland. He showed solidarity with the Jewish community when the city's synagogue had its windows broken previous year, strongly denouncing the vandalism.

In an unusual display of unity in Poland, messages of support for Adamowicz flowed in from politicians from different ends of the political spectrum. "I pray for his return to health and full strength".
