Despite scoring just six goals in 15 Italian League matches so far this campaign, Blues boss Sarri believes the 31-year-old can end his side's struggles in front of goal.

Higuain's arrival could also pave the way for Alvaro Morata's exit at Stamford Bridge.

However, the FA Cup defending champions are said to be targeting Sevilla's Andre Silva - who is on loan from AC Milan and could cost the Spanish League side £32 million to buy in the summer.

The Argentine thrived under Sarri's guidance at Napoli and broke the Serie A record with 37 goals in the 2015/2016 season.

Sarri managed Higuain at Napoli and, according to reports in Spain, could be reunited with the striker, who is on loan at the San Siro from Juventus, in the next 24 hours.

Milan are said to be interested in the possibility of a swap deal involving the similarly out of sorts Alvaro Morata but until a resolution has been found Higuain has been instructed to knuckle down.

However, Leonardo has dismissed the move and has challenged the Argentine to improve at the San Siro.

Gonzalo Higuain has been told by sporting director Leonardo to show responsibility for AC Milan and decide his future at the club.

Chelsea, for their part, are in need of a striker after deploying Eden Hazard as a false nine for a large chunk of the season.
