On Thursday, King said to The New York Times: "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?"

Tim Scott (R-S.C.) argued that it is because of Republicans' refusal to condemn racist rhetoric that they are labeled by others as racists.

Instead of answering directly, Scalise referred to Republicans' statements denouncing King's comments, and said "many Democrats" - he did not name them - had "aligned themselves with anti-Semites" and "called on physical violence".

McCarthy also on Sunday dismissed a report in The Washington Post that President Trump has concealed details of his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "That is not the America I know, and it's most certainly not the party of Lincoln".

"I will not stand back as a leader of this party believing in this nation that all are created equal, that that stands or continues to stand and has any role with us", McCarthy added.

King serves on the Agriculture, Small Business and Judiciary committees, and chairs Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.

The House Republican leader said Sunday he will meet with Rep. Steve King this week to discuss King's future and role in the party and promised action following the Iowa congressman's recent comments in defense of white supremacy.

"We have made significant progress in our nation, and while there is still work to do, we can not let these intolerant and hateful views hold us back. We can not continue down this path if we want to continue to be a great nation".

In his interview with the Times, King said he's OK with immigrants of various races legally entering the us ― so long as American culture stays white and European. "The new normal around here is to praise white supremacists and nationalism as something that shouldn't be shunned", Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol.

When Cruz was asked whether he would support King in the future, the senator did not provide a direct answer. "I think all of us ought to be united regardless of party in saying, white supremacism, white nationalism is hatred, it is bigotry, it is evil, it is wrong". State Sen. Randy Feenstra, R-Hull, announced this week he'd seek the Republican nomination, facing the nine-term King.
