Growing questions have been raised about the Lion Air plane’s previous flight

Indonesia found the cockpit voice recorder from the Lion Air plane that crashed in October, giving investigators a real chance at solving the mystery of what brought down a modern jet.

"It's been found, but we have not received information of the location yet", Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of Indonesia's transport safety committee (KNKT), said by text message, according to Reuters.

The bright orange voice recorder was discovered about 10 metres from the plane's data recorder, said Isswarto, the commander of the navy's Lion Air search and rescue task force.

The two-month-old Boeing 737 Max 8 jet crashed into the Java Sea just minutes after taking off from Jakarta on 29 October, killing all 189 people on board.

The flight data recorder gathers information about the speed, altitude and direction of the plane with enough storage for 25 hours of data, while the cockpit voice recorder keeps track of pilots' conversations and other sounds in the cockpit.

The probe into the crash causes is underway.

Lion Air is the third-largest buyer of the updated single-aisle plane from Boeing, behind Southwest Airlines and Flydubai.

Black box data help explain almost 90% of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

Authorities called off the grim task of identifying victims of the crash in November, with only 125 people identified after tests on human remains that filled some 200 body bags.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and global destinations.

The crash was the world's first of a Boeing Co 737 MAX jet and the deadliest of 2018, and the recovery of the aircraft's second black box earlier on Monday may provide an account of the last actions of the doomed jet's pilots.

The device is being transported to a navy port in Jakarta, Nugroho said, and will be handed over to the transportation safety committee, which is overseeing the accident investigation.
