The news comes after it broke that Benfica had sacked Rui Vitoria following their 2-0 defeat to Portimonese, leaving them fourth in the league, after winning the division in 2016 and 2017.

Vitoria won two Primeira Liga titles with Benfica but left the club earlier this week with the Encarnados now seven points adrift of league leaders Porto.

Now According to the Mirror, Benfica have identified the Portuguese as their next manager following the departure of Rui Vitoria.

Jose Mourinho may have been out of the public eye since his sacking about two weeks ago, but the former Manchester United manager isn't slipping down the managerial radar just yet.

Benfica bosses were believed to be willing to meet the high wage demands of Mourinho but the 55-year-old made clear Benfica were not in his immediate plans, state outlet Record.

Mourinho has spent the last two-and-a-half years at Manchester United, but the Portuguese was removed from his position in the Old Trafford dugout last month.

The ex Chelsea and Real Madrid gaffer began his coaching career at Benfica and led the side to six wins from 11 games.

The report suggests that Benfica may not have the funds to offer Mourinho a long-term deal but that a short-term arrangement until the end of the season may be more realistic.
