Los Angeles teachers to resume classes after reaching deal

Teachers picket on the second day of the Los Angeles school teachers strike

"We have been working tirelessly to reach an agreement and have made tremendous progress with five days and more than 50 hours of negotiations at City Hall", Garcetti said Monday afternoon.

The Los Angeles teachers union may have just ended a lengthy strike over a contract dispute, but could soon find itself back in court as a local educator filed a class action suit over forced dues.

The Board of Education is expected to move quickly to ratify the deal.

Teachers were fighting for a raise, as well as smaller class sizes, and more nurses, counselors, and librarians, among other issues.

The agreement was broadly described by officials at the press conference and details were promised to be released later. In France, teachers in the "Red Pens" movement have joined the Yellow Vest protests, and in Greece, the Netherlands and other countries teachers are striking or preparing to strike to fight social inequality and austerity measures.

"My boys have had to see the nurse three or four times this year", he said.

Los Angeles, is home to the country's second-largest school district and serves nearly a half-million students. They slowed down as they drove through puddles so as not to splash us and sometimes stopped to tell us how much teachers have meant to them.

Caputo-Pearl and other current union leaders became determined to revitalize the UTLA after mass layoffs destabilized the district during the 2008 recession, according to a January 19 article in The Nation. "But we have reached the tipping point in our negotiations with DPS where we must stand up for our profession and for our students and do what is best to keep dedicated, experienced teachers in this district", union president Henry Roman said in a statement announcing the results of the vote. "More so now that she'll be with her teacher".

Marianne O'Brien said the need for additional support staff was one of the main reasons she walked picket lines.

Teachers are scheduled to vote on the agreement Tuesday, so the earliest they would return to work would be Wednesday.

The leadership of the district - an independent body that does not answer to the Los Angeles mayor - had said throughout the talks that they largely supported the union's goals but did not have enough money to cover the demands.

Schools stayed open, staffed by a skeleton crew of substitute teachers and administrators. Our students will have a nurse in every school and more counselors and librarians.

District officials went on the offensive over the weekend, making the argument that their offer was generous and responsive to longstanding teacher complaints about stagnant salaries.

The mayor's office says negotiators plan to reconvene at 9:15 a.m.

Los Angeles teachers have taken a courageous stand to defend the right to quality education for all youth. "It gets to lower class sizes, it gets to support services".

"The two sides were bargaining until late last night and have been bargaining around the clock since Thursday", the update said.

The firefighters are taking time out Tuesday morning from a conference of the International Association of Fire Fighters to back the teachers.

The school district, in its afternoon message, also wanted to send a positive message - about the effort its side had put in.

The district is the second largest in the US after New York City.
