St. Louis officer charged in death of colleague during deadly game with revolver

A St. Louis police officer was charged with involuntary manslaughter for shooting and killing another officer during a Russian roulette-style game, according to KTVI-TV.

The St. Louis prosecutor on Friday charged 29-year-old officer Nathaniel Hendren with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 24-year-old officer Katlyn Alix.

Katlyn Alix, 24, was off-duty when she went to Nathaniel Hendren's flat on Thursday morning.

The probable cause statement says Hendren's partner felt uncomfortable and told the two they should not play with the guns.

Initially it was announced that one of the officers had mishandled the weapon, but it was revealed that they had been playing a game in which one bullet was loaded into a gun and the officers proceeded to fire the weapon at each other.

When it didn't fire, Hendren took it back and aimed it at Alix before pulling the trigger again, police allege.

Hayden, in a statement, says Alix was an "enthusiastic and energetic young woman with a bright future ahead of her". "And the two men were officers". The warrant says she died of her injuries.

Hendren and his partner were working a late shift Wednesday, but traveled to his house two miles away from the southeastern border of the district of their assigned patrol area, the paper reported. That officer, identified as Hendren's partner, said he didn't want to be involved with the gunplay and started to leave the apartment.

This tragedy comes at a time when St. Louis police are under heavy scrutiny, after four officers were indicted by a federal grand jury in November in the brutal beating of a 22-year police veteran who had been posing as a protester during 2017 demonstrations over a fatal police shooting.

No other details were immediately released, including the names of the officers or why they were at the same home when the shooting happened. She was pronounced dead at St. Louis University Hospital.

Then it was Alix's turn.

Police tape remains at the scene of a shooting in St. Louis on Thursday. In October, she married another St. Louis police officer, who was not present at the home during the shooting, the Post-Dispatch reported.
