In a historic first for the country, Malaysia's king abdicated yesterday, ending weeks of speculation about his future after he took medical leave.

Reports then circulated online that he had married a former Miss Moscow in Russian Federation.

He was elected as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the 243rd Meeting (Special) of the Conference of Rulers in October 2016, who also voted for the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah to be the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Dahlan said that the king had expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and the government for their cooperation.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy and the king assumes a largely ceremonial role, including as the custodian of Islam in the Muslim-majority country.

Just four months later, the Oxford graduate dismissed his younger brother Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra from Kelantan's Succession Council, which is tasked with deciding on whether a new Sultan should be installed - all while his father was warded in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

Malaysia has nine royal households with the ruler changing every five years.

His slip up caused a security alert and he learned he would have to be more careful when trying to contact earth from outer space. Kuipers revealed the mistake on the radio via the Dutch public broadcasting organization Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS).

Portraits of the king and queen adorn government buildings throughout the country. The king is referred to as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or "He Who Is Made Lord".

The Palace said the Kelantan monarch had informed the other rulers of his decision.

"The King, during his tenure, worked to fulfil his responsibilities and the trust given him as Head of State, working to be an anchor of stability, a source of justice, a core of unity and the protector of unification among the people".

Sultan Muhammad V has stepped down as Malaysia's king hot on the heels of his reported marriage to a Russian beauty queen.

"As the Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, he is very proud of the sacrifices and loyalty that were shown to him and the country all this while".

The King has prepared to return to his home state of Kelantan to be with the State government and the people of Kelantan to help uplift the state further.
