The Padma Shri is the fourth-highest civilian honour - after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan.

In the Padma Shri category, Sikh riot activist H S Phoolka, former Akali Dal minister S S Dhinsha, author Gita Mehta, who is also the sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, former Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, actors Manoj Bajpayee, Prabhu Deva, late Kader Khan, singer Shankar Mahadevan, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, football player Sunil Chetri, eminent surgeon Sandeep Guleria have been picked.

The award was long due for veteran actor Kader Khan, who recently passed away at the age of 81, after prolonged illness. He has been recognised for his vast contribution to the world of films as a writer and actor par excellence.

The government announced Padma Awards recipient names on the eve of 70th Republic Day.

I think it is one of the biggest civilian awards that one can get. I have neither flattered anyone in my life, nor will I ever.

Since his debut in Bollywood in mid-1990s, the National Award-winner has acted in mainstream as well as indie films.

While Manoj and the late Kader Khan will be awarded in the field of of art, acting and films, Prabhudheva will be awarded in the field of art and dance. As a screenwriter, Kader Khan frequently collaborated with Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra.
