Musician and activist Pegi Young died of cancer yesterday at the age of 66, a post on her official Facebook page confirms.

Pegi is survived by her children with Neil - son Ben, and daughter Amber - as well as her ex-stepson Zeke and two grandchildren.

In the early years of their marriage, Young devoted herself almost full-time to raising their daughter Amber and son Ben, the latter born with cerebral palsy.

Young was married to Neil for 36 years before their divorce in 2014. But in 1994, she began singing background vocals for her husband, starting at the Academy Awards when she joined him on "Philadelphia".

She had released five solo albums since 2007 and toured extensively on her own, occasionally with Neil on guitar. "So, yeah, there was a bit of a shock value there".

However, the majority of her time was spent focused on the Bridge School, an educational program she founded with Neil in 1986, aimied at helping children with severe physical and speech impairments.

In his 2012 book Waging Heavy Peace, Neil credited his wife for her support through the successes and difficulties during their marriage, which included each undergoing brain surgery at different points for separate ailments. She was "surrounded by her friends and family in her native California" when she passed. She also toured and performed with her band The Survivors. The annual Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View, California continually attracts A-level talent and helps raise money for the school. "We could get Bruce Springsteen!'" he wrote.
