Pelosi says Democrats will give "nothing for the wall"

Pres. Trump holds cabinet meeting amid partial government shutdown

It's understandable that the president's invitation to congressional leaders to attend a White House "briefing" on border issues from the Department of Homeland Security got a lot of attention, since it ended days of virtual non-communication on the issues underlying the ongoing partial government shutdown (aside from Trump's communications to the whole world via Twitter). "Could be a long time", he said at a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

Pres. Trump made it clear that he was standing by his request for $5.6 Billion for border wall funding calling it a small price to pay to keep the country safe.

The meeting is set for 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) in the White House Situation Room, generally used for high-level security concerns such as military planning.

Democrats take charge of the House of Representatives from Trump's fellow Republicans when the new 2019-2020 Congress convenes on Thursday.

Pelosi has said that Democrats will pass legislation to reopen government but not provide funding for a wall.

The visit by Pelosi and Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer would be their first to the White House since their sharp exchange with Trump in the Oval Office on December 11 during which the president told them he would be "proud to shut down the government for border security".

"We never did get through the complete briefing", Mr. McCarthy said. That's partly because most of the federal government is immune.

Russia Arrests American Marine on 'Espionage' Charges
Whelan's family, in a statement that David Whelan posted on Twitter, said: "We are deeply concerned for his safety and well-being. Russia's FSB security service did not acknowledge the arrest until Monday when it claimed Whelan was detained on a "spy mission".

Democrats say they may be willing to talk later, but won't do that amid a shutdown. Some 75 percent of funding was approved on time.

Pres. Trump also recalled the recent death of a California police officer who was killed by an illegal immigrant, suggesting these type of incidents could be avoided with more border security.

"The bottom line is very simple". It is not helping the president.

Democrats' plan, which they have promised will be the first order of policy business after the House convenes Thursday, would extend a full year's funding to eight departments that ran out of money on December 22.

Homeland Security, meanwhile, would get a one-month infusion of cash, lasting through February 8, at the same rate of spending as 2018.

The partial government shutdown began on December 22 after Trump refused to sign a budget deal that didn't include billions of dollars for his long-promised and long-stalled southern border wall.

The president showed no sign of backing down, and disputed Democrats' claims that he's feeling heat over a prolonged partial shutdown. "I will go right through my savings, you know, and then I have to figure out what to do", she said.
