After three years of being on the decline, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increased by an estimated 3.4 percent last year, according to a report published on Tuesday by Rhodium Group based on emissions data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The data shows the United States is unlikely to meet its pledge to reduce emissions by 2025 under the Paris climate agreement.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States is set to leave the Paris accord in 2020 while his administration has ended many existing environmental protections. "It is the second largest gain in more than two decades". Emissions from electrical power generation, for example, were up 1.9%, despite coming largely from natural gas rather than coal as a near-record number of coal plants closed a year ago.

Manufacturing production increased a year ago, buoyed by a generally robust economy. "That's more than twice the pace the United States achieved between 2005 and 2017 and significantly faster than any seven-year average in USA history". "It is certainly feasible, but will likely require a fairly significant change in policy in the very near future and/or extremely favorable market and technological conditions", researchers concluded. Commercial and residential buildings generated ten% more emissions.

Cold spells in winter in a number of regions led to a rise in energy while a hot summer led to more air conditioning use. But previous year, the strong economic growth meant a rise. For example, at a 1.5°C rise, global sea level rise could be 10 centimeters lower by the year 2100, compared with a predicted sea level at 2°C.

While the rising emissions are directly tied to a surging economy and particular to energy demands over the last several, Trevor Houser, a partner at Rhodium who worked on the study, told the Post that the increase would not have been as dramatic without the Trump administration's rollback of key Obama-era policies created to confront the climate crisis that the current White House falsely claims does not even exist.

"The U.S. was already off track in meeting its Paris Agreement targets". The first happened in 2010, when the economy recovered from the Great Recession.

The construction and industry sectors also saw sizable emission increases. Trump also campaigned on a promise to restore the coal industry.

The Environmental Protection Agency chief, Andrew Wheeler, often trumpets declines in greenhouse gases, citing data showing that they fell 2.7% from 2016 to 2017.

Under Mr Trump's administration, the federal government has also opened up once-protected lands for oil and gas drilling across the United States and has proposed ending regulations on fuel standards for cars and trucks after 2021. The U.S. ranks number two on the list of the world's countries by Carbon dioxide emissions; China is first, and India is the third.

The US jump also marks a worldwide trend: 2018 saw an all-time high for global Carbon dioxide emissions and was the fourth warmest year on record.

"The transportation sector held its title as the largest source of USA emissions for the third year running, as robust growth in demand for diesel and jet fuel offset a modest decline in gasoline consumption". While this appears to be good news, power sector emissions overall increased by 1.9 percent, according to the estimates.

Emissions from residential and commercial buildings, which use oil and gas for heating and cooking, rose 10 percent past year.
