Serena Williams ensures meeting with Roger Federer will have an edge

Roger Federer got Switzerland's Hopman Cup campaign off to a winning start

Williams and Federer are perhaps the greatest tennis players in the history of the game and hold the record for winning the most number of grand slam titles for any man and woman in the open era.

"Years and years of admiring him and just being level with him in the same point of our career and being the same age and it was really cool to actually play someone, still in their prime like me, both in our primes, this doesn't happen so it was really cool".

The meeting between the pair not only showed two all-time greats on court together for the first time, it also showed the respect and camaraderie they both had for each other. In front of a crowd of 14,000, Federer, representing Switzerland, took the court with Belinda Benic and beat Williams, who played alongside Frances Tiafoe, five games to three, the BBC reported.

Federer was equally excited to have taken part in the mixed-doubles matchup, and admitted that he was a little concerned about facing Williams' booming serve. "You see how determined and focused she is, and I love that about her".

And Williams has expressed her amazement at how Federer copes with two sets of twins.

Federer and playing partner Belinda Bencic overcame Williams and Frances Tiafoe in the Fast4 format as Switzerland beat the US 2-1 in front of a 14,000 capacity crowd.

Eight countries are competing in two groups at the tournament, which serves as a warm-up to the first Grand Slam event of the season, the Australian Open in Melbourne.

"It was great, great fun".

Federer also posted the image, writing, "Oh what a night", alongside the tennis ball and fire emojis.

Twitter trolls Rani Mukerji for her "martial arts" comment
Although there are a few who supported Rani's words, most of the reactions on social media appeared to be against her. While everyone else expressed a knowledgeable view, Rani's view of women learning self-defence came across as dumb.

"Thankfully it's something I don't have to often think about".

Williams grabbed at her right shoulder on several occasions late in the second set but played down any injury concern.

"We'll see how I feel but I will be tucked in bed at 9pm, worry about me".

Serena: 'The guy is great.

When asked if he meant she was the greatest female tennis player of all time, Federer clarified that he meant the greatest "overall".

The No. 91-ranked Norrie had defeated Greece's No. 15-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Saturday in one of the biggest victories of his career, but was outclassed in his first match against Federer.

However, even a rare defeat couldn't take the gloss off the experience of facing Federer for the first, and nearly certainly the only, time.

The Swiss duo are the defending champions. It's a killer serve, you can't read it. I've watched him all the time but I never realised how good it was.
