The Danish broadcaster said that police were urging survivors to contact their loved ones to let them know they are safe.

A tarpaulin on the freight train, which was carrying Carlsberg lorries, is believed to have hit the passenger train on the Storebaelt bridge prompting it to to brake suddenly.

Danish Railways told Denmark's TV2 that the six were passengers on a train from the city of Odense, on the central Danish island of Fyn, heading toward the capital Copenhagen.

Several people were killed in a train accident at the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark, which links the country's central islands.

Police did not provide further details about the number of people injured in Wednesday's incident, which took place about 8 a.m. local time.

Wall Street gains at end of turbulent 2018
The economy is expected to finish 2018 with around a 3 percent annual growth rate, which some economists did not think possible. While the economy isn't facing the challenges people in 1931, during the Great Depression, were facing, headwinds are building.

This could have prompted the driver of the passenger train to brake suddenly.

The railway line runs alongside a motorway that had been closed earlier because of the strong winds in the area.

Police are scheduled to give a news conference later this morning.
