Syria says Israeli airstrikes hit warehouse at Damascus airport

Syrian air defense systems intercept Israeli missiles in the skies near Damascus late

A military source told Syrian SANA news agency later that Israeli jets fired several missiles towards vicinity of Damascus, most of the missiles were downed.

The sounds of blasts were first heard at 11:30 p.m. (21:30 GMT) on Friday and they continued into Saturday.

"The results of the aggression so far were limited to a strike on one of the warehouses at Damascus airport", the Arab country's SANA news agency reported, quoting an unnamed military source as saying.

"At 11:15, Israeli fighter jets fired several missiles towards the area of Damascus, and instantly, our air defences confronted the missiles and downed a lot of them", the source told SANA.

These were near the airport and around the Kisweh area south of Damascus, the observatory said. Syrian air defense systems thus had to limit their response to avoid civilian casualties, so two of the sixteen Israeli-launched laser-guided bombs reportedly reached their targets, wounding three people.

If confirmed, this would be the second round of Israeli strikes in Syria since United States announced its intent to withdraw on December 19.

Iranian and Iran-backed groups including Lebanon's Hezbollah have deployed into Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad's government during the war.

Since then Israel has been very careful with its operation over Syria.

Russian Federation blamed the Israeli military for that incident - a charge rejected by Jerusalem - and has supplied Syria with the advanced S-300 air defense system.

The S-300 systems were delivered to Syria late past year, but they are not yet believed to be in use, as the Syrian air defense teams still need to be trained to operate them.
