Texas 12-year-old faces capital murder charge in 24-year-old man's death

A woman called the police, telling them that someone had broken into her home and shot her boyfriend.

A 12-year-old boy was charged this week in the fatal shooting of a professional boxer, unnerving the local boxing community in the South Texas town where he lived and trained.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m.

VanMeter began boxing professionally in 2016 and had a 2-4 record, according to BoxRec. He recently made some changes to further his boxing career and won his last two fights, including a decision win in November.

"She stayed in the back bedroom and he went to check it out", said UPD chief Daniel Rodriguez to the Uvalde Leader News.

When officers arrived, they saw VanMeter lying on the living room floor near the front door with a gunshot wound to his head.

VanMeter went to investigate, and his girlfriend phoned 911 upon hearing a gunshot. The man was transported to Uvalde Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:43 p.m.

Witnesses told authorities that a male dressed in all black with a black bandana over his face was seen running from the home where VanMeter was shot.

Uvalde police said on Thursday that the boy is charged in the slaying of John Duane VanMeter and is being held at a juvenile detention center.

Under Texas law, children under the age of 14 can not be tried as adults for first-degree felonies.
