The UK games market is now bigger than video and music combined

Video games now account for half of all United Kingdom entertainment revenues, according to new figures released by the Entertainment Retailers Association.

Another big piece of news is that the video games market made £3.864 billion previous year which has now made it worth more than both music and video combined which generated in total £3.67 billion.

It now makes gaming a larger market than video and music combined for the first time ever.

Unfortunately, there are no charts for the best selling digital games, but the ERA has revealed that the best physical sold game of 2018 was Federation Internationale de Football Association 19, which sold 2.5 million units in total and 1.89 million of those were physical.

Physical unit sales fell by 2.8% in 2018 but the industry still accounts for 51.3% of the total entertainment market, the ERA said.

The figures showed a 2.8pc shrinkage in physical unit sales compared to a "modest" 12.5pc growth in digital.

The figures also do not take into account digital game sales as well as mobile and free games downloaded and played, the most notable of which is Fortnite - the free-to-play battle royale game which now has more than 200 million players globally.
