Pollard was remembered throughout the community Monday as a hard-working and "model" firefighter.

"This is particularly painful because we've lost a young man, serving our city as a firefighter - Firefighter Steven Pollard, just 30 years old".

The two motorists had reportedly flipped their vehicle and were trapped.

Nigro told The New York Times that Pollard fell while attempting to reach the westbound span of the roadway from the eastbound side: two sets of lanes separated by a two-to-three-foot gap.

Officials say it is unclear whether Pollard knew of the gap when he attempted to cross it.

In statement posted on the department's Facebook page Monday morning FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and Mayor Bill de Blasio identified the probationary firefighter as Steven H. Pollard.

CBSN New York's Jenna DeAngelis has the details.

Firefighter Steven Pollard, 30, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a crash on the Belt Parkway's Mill Basin Bridge on January 6, 2019. He devoted his life to the people of our city and like his brother and his dad, he was trying to do such a good and important work.

A New York City firefighter fell to his death late Sunday when he slipped through a narrow gap between lanes of a newly built bridge while trying to reach the victims of a auto crash. 114 and the 1,151st member of the FDNY to lose his life while working to save others, according to a press release. "It's a very, very tough situation", de Blasio added. Firefighters lined up outside Kings County Hospital early Monday and stood at attention as Pollard's body was taken away.

"As his family mourns him, the department mourns him, and certainly the citizens of our city mourn him", Nigro said.

New York City Police Department commissioner James P. O'Neill tweeted condolences on behalf of "the entire NYPD", writing, "NYC will never forget your sacrifice".
