Donald Trump Will Go on TV to Address Supposed"National Security Crisis at the Border

All the major TV networks, and some cable ones, have now made a decision to televise a Tuesday address by Donald Trump concerning border security and "the wall".

They said Tuesday they will deliver their response to Trump after his address at 9 p.m. EST.

- "I have not discussed the border wall with President Trump, and do not support him on the issue", said Jimmy Carter.

Democrats have repeatedly slammed the proposed wall but have remained vague about counter-proposals that would curb illegal immigration.

Vice President Mike Pence says President Donald Trump's recent claim that his predecessors endorsed his idea of a U.S. -Mexico border wall was an "impression".

US President Donald Trump is set to argue that an immigration "crisis" requires his long-promised wall along the Mexican border.

In the meantime, hundreds of thousands of federal workers face missed paychecks Friday as the shutdown drags through a third week.

Trump's remarks from the White House will also aim to shore up support among Republican lawmakers, who are wary of potential backlash from the public as the effects of the shutdown intensify.

Two days after Trump's speech, he plans to visit the southern border, the White House announced earlier in the week.

Pence told NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday, "I know the president has said that was his impression from previous presidents". There were almost 400,000 apprehensions at the border in the 2018 fiscal year, well down from the early 2000s when arrests regularly topped one million annually. Right now the White House is at a seven on the panic scale. He told CBS News' Major Garrett that the number of families and unaccompanied children showing up at the border is "overwhelming" the ability of "our customs and border patrol to deal with it".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to the news about Trump's speech by demanding that Democratic Party leaders be given an equal amount of time to respond to what he says. All networks carrying Trump's address have agreed to carry the Democrats' response.

In the past, Trump's talks to the nation have been carefully scrutinized for false information.

On Monday the majority of the living USA presidents disputed Mr Trump's claim that some of them have privately told him they regret not building a border wall during their administrations.

Trump will continue pressing his case for the wall with a trip to the border on Thursday.

Democratic leaders have said that they are open to reaching a solution in the funding dispute. The shutdown, which has left some 800,000 government workers furloughed or working without pay, is also affecting national parks, airline security screening, housing and food aid, and economic data.

The partial government shutdown, which began on 22 December, has affected 25% of the government.

Experts say if the shutdown persists, Canadians entering the US will see an escalating impact at the northern border, where Customs and Border Protection officials are working without pay because their jobs are considered an essential service.

The shutdown, now into its 18th day, follows disagreement between the new Democrat-controlled House and the White House over budgeting several government departments whose funding has lapsed.
