John Bolton said there was no timeline for the troops' withdrawal, which was initially expected to be completed within weeks of Trump's abrupt announcement last month.

Responding to U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton's remarks, Turkish presidential spokesman on Sunday said claims that Turkey targets Kurds are "irrational", as the country is fighting Daesh and PKK/PYD/YPG terrorists.

U.S. defence secretary Jim Mattis and a top USA official in the fight against IS, Brett McGurk, resigned soon after his announcement last month.

"But we are decimating ISIS", Trump told reporters, using a different acronym for IS.

Bolton said Trump has made clear he would not allow Turkey to kill the Kurds.

The remarks represent a departure from the president's earlier statements about the timeline for USA involvement in Syria.

More than half a million people have died during the Syrian war and 11 million have been forced to flee their homes.

President Trump's order to withdraw US troops is a "cause-and-effect mission" that requires certain assurances from various players in the region before it can be executed, said Mr. Bolton, the first administration official to outline the conditions for withdrawal.

If chemical weapons were to be used, "a lot of options would be on the table. if they don't heed the lessons of those two strikes the next one will be more telling", Bolton said.

Meanwhile, America's Kurdish allies in north-east Syria were left feeling exposed as Turkey, which regards them as terrorists, appeared poised to move against them.

"We're pulling out of Syria", Trump said Sunday at the White House.

"You have backed, both in word and deed, Israel's right to defend itself, which we exercise constantly", the prime minister said.

Netanyahu said he was planning to take Bolton on a tour of the Golan Heights, weather permitting.

At a meeting on Tuesday in Brazil, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Israeli premier that the Syria pullout would not affect US support and protection of Israel.

Those conditions, he said, included defeating what's left of IS in Syria and protecting Kurdish militias who have fought alongside US troops against the extremist group.

Bolton said USA troops would remain at the critical are of al-Tanf, in southern Syria, to counter growing Iranian activity in the region.

British special forces are the only military personnel understood to be operating in Syria alongside the US.

Two British special forces soldiers have been seriously injured after being hit by a missile in an attack by so-called Islamic State attack in Syria.

Israel annexed East Jerusalem after capturing it from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War, a move not recognized by most of the worldwide community.
