Arizona police investigate after 'vegetative patient gives birth'

This case is the flawless example of disturbing and twisted.

A female patient at Phoenix, Arizona's Hacienda Healthcare - who was in a vegetative state as a result of an incident in which she almost drowned ten years ago - gave birth on December 29 after apparently being raped at the facility some months earlier. Since entering the hospital's care, she's been in a complete coma.

She said she was assisting a quadriplegic resident out of the shower one day when another CNA entered the room who "just wanted to talk with her". "It is alarming that none of the staff members was aware of her pregnancy and she survived with no prenatal care at all", the doctor added.

It was easy for police to assume the patient was raped and impregnated during her vulnerable state. However, Spokeswoman Nancy Salmon of Hacienda Healthcare attempted to do damage control with the following statement.

"Hacienda Healthcare has been in business in the valley for over 50 years, and has an outstanding reputation providing high quality specialized care for our patients". Hacienda HealthCare, which has 40 programmes that serve more than 2500 people a year in Arizona, according to its website, did not immediately respond to calls and messages seeking comment. We are proud of our record and our position as an industry leader in caring for the intellectually and developmentally disabled.

The woman, who hasn't been identified, is admitted in the Hacienda HealthCare near Phoenix and the facility said that the "deeply disturbing incident" was known to them.

"While federal and state privacy laws prohibit us from publicly discussing a patient's health or case, Hacienda has and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all the relevant regulatory agencies regarding this matter", Leibowitz said by email.

On its website, Hacienda HealthCare says, "Our mission is to provide every person we are given the opportunity to serve, exceptional and compassionate care 24/7 in order to maximize their potential while continuing to address unmet health care needs throughout Arizona". He declined to confirm whether the investigation involved a possible sex crime or elaborate on the circumstances that prompted the investigation.

The state department of economic security dispatched a team to conduct health and safety checks at the facility, and the department of health services has beefed up safety measures: more staff, increased monitoring and stronger security.
