WH Economic Adviser: 'Not Going To Be Just Apple' Feeling Effects Of China Trade War

Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs, levying duties on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods.

Now China and the United States face a key March deadline for talks to end the damaging trade war, or Washington could proceed with a sharp hike in USA tariffs on Chinese goods originally set for January 1 and Beijing could retaliate.

A working team led by Deputy US Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish will come to China to have "positive and constructive discussions" with Chinese counterparts, China's commerce ministry said in a statement on its website.

In December, Beijing's commerce ministry said China and the U.S. "made new progress" on the issues of trade balance and intellectual property, one of the main sticking points of the trade dispute, during a phone call between officials from the two countries.

China´s major state-owned grain stockpiler also said it had resumed buying U.S. soybeans, and Beijing announced it would suspend extra tariffs on US-made cars and auto parts starting January 1.

Hassett argued that a softer economy in China is cutting into USA companies' sales there and that the economic pain gives Trump leverage in ongoing trade negotiations.

Growth is expected by the government to have eased to around 6.5% in 2018, down from 6.9% in 2017.

Chinese data on Monday showed its manufacturing activity contracted for the first time in more than two years.

A sharp drop in Chinese economic growth will hit the profits of USA firms but Apple iPhone sales should recover once Washington strikes a trade deal with China, a senior White House adviser said on Thursday.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Thursday that "it's not going to be just Apple" that faces revenue shortfalls as a result of the trade tensions initiated by President Donald Trump between the United States and China.
