VW Reviving The Classic Beach Buggy As An Electric Concept

Volkswagen electric Dune Buggy concept brings the 60s to the present

Now, VW is bringing the dune basher back.

Volkswagen aims to spur interest in its upcoming lineup of mass-market full-electric cars with a modern version of an American beach buggy from the 1960s. It is, as Volkswagen Head Designer Klaus Bischoff calls it, "vibrancy and energy on four wheels".

Almost 60 years ago, Bruce Meyers created the Meyers Manx - an indecently cute VW Beetle-based dune buggy that came to define the beach culture that conceived it.

Well, the dune buggy may have been born in the U.S., but it's being reinvented in Switzerland at this year's International Motor Show in Geneva.

CBS All Access’s The Twilight Zone Reboot Gets a Premiere Date
A dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity is coming exclusive to CBS All Access this spring. The Twilight Zone is scheduled to premiere on April 1 , and no that's not an April Fool's Day joke.

The company modeled the concept vehicle, coined the 'e-buggy, ' on the "legendary American dune buggies from the 60s and 70s" but gave it a contemporary twist by basing it on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform instead of the Beetle basis.

The vehicle remains true to typical styling cues of a buggy with no fixed roof or conventional doors, while the free-standing wheels fitted with off-road tyres and open side sills.

This vehicle is certainly expected to be a low-volume niche vehicle unlike cars like the I.D hatchback.

Essentially a Beetle chassis and engine with an aftermarket fibreglass body that freed your spirit from the boredom of everyday motoring (and any anxiety you might have had about sea air and corrosion), these buggies were popular with surfer crowds in many parts of the world, including South Africa. The concept was built to show how versatile the MEB platform is and how it could be used to develop low-volume specialty vehicles. So for its latest concept auto, Volkswagen chose to use its new electric platform to build a dune buggy of its own. The Volkswagen press conference will start at 10:20 am in Hall 2 on March 5.
