Walk Off The Earth band member, Mike Taylor, dies

The band says it was of natural causes.

Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor, keyboardist and singer in viral YouTube sensation Walk Off the Earth, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday night, according to a statement from the band.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and band member, Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor", the band said in a statement on Twitter. He passed away in his sleep last night (December 30) from natural causes.

Walk Off The Earth shot to fame with their cover of Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know, before signing to Columbia Records and releasing two albums in 2013's R.E.V.O. and 2015's Sing It All Away.

In the video for their cover, all five band members are playing the same guitar simultaneously and it gained 175-million views on YouTube in just four months.

Later the mayor issued a statement, saying: "Mike and the other members of Walk Off the Earth are from Burlington, with Mike and his family making their home in downtown Burlington".

'Our deepest sympathies are with his two children, whom he adored more than anything else in the world.

Walk off the Earth, the Burlington-based band, has shared some sad news.

The band had planned on kicking off a world tour with a set at CBC's New Year's Eve celebration in Niagara Falls Monday, with a Twitter post featuring Taylor published earlier Sunday. Mike and the band returned to our home town many times to show their support and love for the city and we thank them for that.
