A Chinese woman has made headlines after she woke up unable to hear male voices, according to The Daily Mail.

A woman in China was recently diagnosed with a rare hearing-loss condition that prevents her from hearing men's voices.

While Ms. Chen was able to hear every word a female ENT said during her appointment, she was unable to pick up on the voice of a young male patient at the hospital, Dr. Xiaoqing said.

Ms Chen was diagnosed with reverse-slope hearing loss (or low-frequency hearing loss), a condition which is said to affect nearly one in 13,000 people with hearing problems.

Sears Agrees to Consider Revised Takeover Bid
Some creditors have concluded that they can recover more of their investment if the stores and other assets are auctioned off. The hedge fund will also assume $135 million in tax bills for properties that Lampert hopes to acquire as part of his bid.

The doctors believe the condition - called reverse-slope hearing loss, or low-frequency hearing loss - was brought on by stress, as Ms Chen had been working late under stressful conditions and wasn't getting enough sleep before her hearing suddenly deteriorated. Indeed, autoimmune conditions in the inner ear can cause balance problems that may lead to vomiting - a symptom that Chen described to her doctor, Clark noted. The term describes the shape of a hearing test audiogram of those who can't hear low frequencies. It's not just male voices they struggle with but any particularly low sound, including voices over the phone, the hum of a auto, and thunder.

High-frequency hearing loss is much more common and generally means people struggle to, or can't hear the voices of women and children. Autoimmune disorders that affect the inner ear - which are thought to occur in about 1 percent of the US population - may also be a cause of RSHL, Clark said. Less often, a shift in the pressure of ear fluid can trigger reverse-sloping hearing loss. By 2050, that figure is expected to hit over 900 million.

To clarify, the woman can only hear voices belonging to other women. A range of factors can cause hearing loss, including hereditary diseases, infections, certain drugs, aging, and exposure to loud noises.
